Understanding Levels of Care
...........Independent Living
Independent Living (also called room and board). Unlicensed apartment style living that provides housekeeping, meals, and minimal social activities. No hands-on or personal care is provided unless privately hired. Cost for independent room and boarding = approximately $1500-$2500 per month.
Assisted Living........... (Elder Homes)
Assisted Living (also called residential care and board and care): Licensed by the Department of Social Services as non-medical, 24 hour, supervised, custodial-care facilities. Generally accepts residents who need some degree of hands-on care short of “total care.” Facilities may be large, hotel-like, or small home-like residences (such as Elder Homes). Accepts private pay and some long term care insurance policies (approx: $2000-$3800/mo).

...........Skilled Nursing
Skilled Nursing (also called nursing homes): licensed by Department of Health Services as 24 hour nursing staffed facilities with physician oversight. Able to care for bedridden elders who require “total care”, including large wounds and tube feedings. Accepts MediCare and MediCal if patient meets criteria for “daily skilled services,” otherwise private pay (approx: $4000-$6000/mo).
